Women-led decarbonization initiatives – GeTDecarb
Project Description
Indonesia is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts and is also one of the major greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters. The deep decarbonization of its energy sector is closely tied to changes in production, consumption, and people’s daily activities. At the same time, patriarchal structures are deeply rooted in the country’s society. Therefore, the main target group of the project are community women in three Indonesian regions: Ambon, Makassar and Yogyakarta. Currently, grassroot women lack access to information and community decision-making on climate change action. The overall objective of the project is to initiate decarbonization pathways and climate-resilient futures for communities and to receive adequate policy and programmatic support from local governments. To achieve this, the project works on three levels with respective target groups to develop through participatory feminist action research strategies and pilots. The measures result in grassroots women, supported by local women’s organisations, leading decarbonization and climate resilience initiatives based on their needs.
Our approach
The project works on three levels with respective target groups:
- Local Women’s Organisations: Local women’s organisations will facilitate the process and support of local grassroots women in becoming recognized experts on gender transformative decarbonization and environmental protection in their communities.
- Grassroots Women: Women living in six communities will develop decarbonization strategies based on their needs, utilizing available resources and contributing to gender equality. This participatory approach ensures the solutions are tailored to local contexts and to build new capabilities such as political participation strategies and communication skills.
- Local Governments: The project will strengthen the capacities of local governments, supporting them in gaining knowledge about gender-just and effective climate policies and how to include local women in the decision-making process, using gender assessment tools, developed in a previous IKI project.
New ideas, new projects
The project will conduct Participatory Feminist Action Research (FPAR) with 30 grassroots women in each of the three regions. Additionally, training and workshops will be organised to enhance the capacity of local women’s organisations. This will lead to the implementation of local decarbonization “pilot project”, meaning small scale initiatives. These initiatives will serve as a model, encouraging women from other communities to develop similar projects. Community visits will introduce the pilots and provide opportunities for replication. A national event will also be organized to showcase the results of the pilots, promoting the scaling up of the project and encouraging wider replication.
For advocacy and networking, the project will assess local policies and provide input through dialogues and face-to-face meetings with local governments on decarbonization and climate resilience.
